For many women, the decision to undergo breast augmentation is deeply personal. Some seek it for confidence, others for balance in their body shape, and many after life events such as pregnancy or weight loss. But with so much information floating around, it can feel overwhelming.

To cut through the noise, we sat down with Dr. Maya Kapoor, a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 15 years of experience, to get her candid take on what women really need to know about breast augmentation.

Q: Dr. Kapoor, let’s start with the basics. What exactly is breast augmentation?

Dr. Camphor: Breast growth is a surgical process where we increase the shape and size of the breasts, usually with transplantation or sometimes with fat transfer from the patient's body. While many people think purely as cosmetic, it is actually about helping women feel how they want to see and feel. It is one of the most common cosmetic surgery around the world and for good reasons.

(On one side: She smiles because she says that the number of patients asking about "natural looking results" has touched the sky in the last five years.)

Q: What motivates most women to consider this procedure?

Dr. Kapoor: Every woman’s story is unique. Some are looking to restore lost volume after breastfeeding, others want more proportionate curves, and some simply want to feel more confident in their clothing. I often tell patients—it’s not about what society expects, but what makes you feel your best.

Interestingly, we also see women who’ve had breast augmentation in the past and now want adjustments, either because their bodies have changed or because surgical techniques have improved.

Q: There’s often concern about safety. How safe is breast augmentation today?

Dr. Kapoor: That’s one of the biggest questions I get! Breast augmentation is very safe when performed by a qualified surgeon. Implants are rigorously tested, and surgical protocols today are extremely advanced. Of course, like any surgery, there are risks—such as infection, capsular contracture, or implant rupture—but these risks are relatively low.

The key is transparency. Patients should have a detailed consultation, ask all their questions, and make sure they’re comfortable with both the procedure and the surgeon.

Q: Let’s talk about implants. What choices do women have?

Dr. Kapoor: Great question. The two main types are saline and silicone implants. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water and can be adjusted during surgery. Silicone implants, which are the more popular choice, feel closer to natural breast tissue.

There’s also the option of a fat transfer, which uses liposuction to take fat from another part of the body—like the abdomen or thighs—and inject it into the breasts. It’s great for women who want a modest increase without implants.

(Aside: She points out that some patients actually choose augmentation as part of a larger body contouring plan—two birds, one stone.)

Q: What about recovery? How tough is it really?

Dr. Kapoor: Recovery is usually easier than people's imagination. Most patients are moving up and moving within a day, and many return to light work in a week. Certainly there is some agony, but pain is very managed with medicine.

The important part is following post-up instructions-showing some heavy lifting, wearing supportive clothes, and follow-up appointments. Within a month or two, most patients return to their normal routine, often with a large smile when they see in the mirror.

Q: Are there any myths about breast augmentation you’d like to clear up?

Dr. Kapoor: Oh, plenty! One of the biggest myths is that implants always look “fake.” That’s not true anymore—today’s techniques allow for very natural results. Another myth is that breast implants prevent breastfeeding. In reality, many women with implants can still breastfeed without issues.

And here’s a fun fact: breast implants don’t last forever, but they don’t automatically “expire” at 10 years either. Many women keep their implants for much longer without any problems.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering breast augmentation?

Dr. Kapoor: Do this for yourself, not for anyone else. Spend time in research, meet with many surgeons if necessary, and do not hurry the decision. Bring pictures of the look you are expecting, but stay open for professional advice - your anatomy plays a big role in playing the best role.

And finally, remember: Breast growth is not about chasing perfection. It is about creating harmony with your body and feeling comfortable in your skin.

Final thoughts

After our conversation, it is clear that breast growth is only more than a cosmetic process-it is often part of a personal journey towards confidence and self-realization. Whether you are considering transplant or eager about the process, understanding the process through specialist eyes helps to overcome uncertainty.

As Dr. Kapoor has said: "The best results are not about size, but about balance, confidence and feeling of yourself."
