Can I Do MBBS in Nepal Without NEET?

Many Indian students aspiring to become doctors look beyond the borders due to limited medical seats and high fees in private institutions in India. One of the most popular and accessible destinations is Nepal. But a common question arises—Can you do MBBS in Nepal without qualifying NEET? Let’s explore the answer in detail.

Understanding NEET for Indian Students

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a mandatory entrance exam in India for admission into medical and dental programs. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Since 2018, NEET has become compulsory for Indian students, not just for medical colleges in India, but also for studying MBBS abroad.

This includes countries like Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

Is NEET Mandatory for MBBS in Nepal?

Yes, NEET qualification is mandatory for Indian students who wish to pursue MBBS in Nepal. As per the regulations laid down by the Medical Council of India (MCI), now known as the National Medical Commission (NMC), Indian students must qualify NEET to be eligible for admission to any foreign medical university, including those in Nepal.

If you do not qualify NEET, you will not be eligible to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the NMC, nor will you be allowed to sit for the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) after completing your MBBS abroad. FMGE is essential for practicing medicine in India.

Why NEET is Compulsory Even for MBBS in Nepal?

Although Nepal shares strong cultural, historical, and educational ties with India, and Indian students are not treated as foreign nationals there, the NMC has made it compulsory for all Indian nationals to qualify NEET to ensure that students have a basic level of competency and knowledge before entering a medical program.

This ensures:

  • Standardization in medical education
  • Better chances of clearing FMGE after MBBS
  • Eligibility to practice medicine in India legally

What If I Don’t Qualify NEET?

If you don’t qualify NEET:

  • You cannot get admission in any MCI/NMC-approved medical college abroad, including Nepal.
  • Even if a college in Nepal admits you without NEET (which is unlikely), you will not be allowed to register as a doctor in India after completing your degree.
  • You will not be eligible to appear for the FMGE screening test, which is mandatory for Indian citizens with a foreign MBBS degree.

Therefore, attempting to bypass the NEET requirement can put your future career in serious jeopardy.
