Emerging Therapies in Aflatoxicosis Treatment

According to FutureWise analysis the market for aflatoxicosis treatment in 2023 was US$ 0.28 billion, and is expected to reach US$ 0.38 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 4%.
Aflatoxicosis is an important mycotoxin issue that significantly impacts agriculture and livestock. It is primarily caused by aflatoxins, which are potent hepatotoxins that can develop in animal feed during high temperatures, particularly in the presence of insect damage. The fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus are known to infest crops like corn, cottonseed, peanuts, and various nuts, producing high levels of aflatoxins, with aflatoxin B1 recognized as the most toxic variant.
When animals are exposed to aflatoxins, the toxins are metabolized into an epoxide form in the liver, where they can bind to vital macromolecules, including nucleic acids. This can lead to several adverse health effects, such as carcinogenesis, immunosuppression, mutagenesis, teratogenesis, and liver damage, which may result in reduced protein synthesis. Clinically, affected animals may exhibit symptoms such as poor growth rates, lack of appetite, depression, unthriftiness, bleeding, jaundice, and, in severe cases, death.
The diagnosis of aflatoxicosis entails a comprehensive evaluation of liver lesions, careful observation of clinical signs, and the implementation of laboratory tests to identify the presence of aflatoxins in feed or milk. Treatment focuses on removing contaminated feed and providing a balanced diet enriched with quality protein, vitamins, and trace minerals. Additionally, antimicrobial therapy may be necessary for any infections that arise due to immunosuppression, and enhancing biosecurity measures is recommended. Currently, no specific antidote for aflatoxicosis exists.
To control aflatoxicosis related to widespread crop contamination, it is crucial to avoid feeding animals contaminated feed and to employ analytical methods for testing aflatoxins in feed batches. The use of mycotoxin binders in animal feed remains unapproved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); however, hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicates (HSCAs) are widely acknowledged for their efficacy in binding aflatoxins within feed. This binding process effectively minimizes aflatoxin absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. While HSCAs can decrease the levels of aflatoxin M1 in milk from dairy animals consuming contaminated feed, they do not completely eliminate contamination, and recovery may take time, potentially delaying or diminishing the return to normal production levels.
