Best Islands To Visit in Thailand: Complete Guide 2025

Best islands in Thailand? If you’re anything like me, the mere mention of “Thai island” conjures up visions of turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, and the kind of chill vibes that just make your soul sing. And trust me, I’ve seen my fair share of them. After years of exploring this incredible country, clambering over limestone cliffs, and diving into crystal clear waters, I’m here to spill the beans on the ultimate 15 Thai islands you have to consider for your next holiday.

Best Islands To Visit in Thailand

Forget the generic brochures, folks. This isn’t just a list; it’s a deep dive into the heart of what makes each of these gems uniquely special. I’m talking about the places I’ve kicked off my flip-flops, sampled the street food, and danced under the full moon. So, grab a fresh coconut, crank up some reggae, and let’s get ready to plan your perfect island escape in Southeast Asia!

We’re kicking things off on the east coast, where the Gulf of Thailand serves up some of the most iconic and diverse island experiences.

Let’s start with a classic, shall we? Koh Samui isn’t just a name; it’s a vibe. This is one of the largest islands in the Gulf and a true all-rounder. Think stunning resorts, bustling markets, and a lively party scene if you know where to look. I’ve spent countless evenings soaking up the atmosphere on Chaweng Beach, with its vibrant energy and fire shows. But don’t be fooled by the buzz; you can also find serene coves and quiet corners for pure relaxation.

What I love about Koh Samui is its accessibility. With its own international airport, it’s super easy to get to, making it a popular choice for those looking for a seamless start to their island adventure. Beyond the beaches, you can explore impressive Buddhist temples, visit ethical elephant sanctuaries, or get lost in lush coconut groves. It’s a great island for everyone, from families to solo adventurers.

Ah, Koh Phangan. For many, this Thai island is synonymous with the legendary Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Beach. And yes, I’ve definitely had my share of unforgettable nights there, dancing till sunrise with thousands of fellow travelers. The energy is absolutely electric, and it’s truly a rite of passage for many visiting Southern Thailand.

But here’s the secret: Koh Phangan is so much more than a party island. Venture away from the main party spots, and you’ll discover pristine beaches like Bottle Beach, tranquil yoga retreats, and lush jungle treks leading to breathtaking waterfalls. I remember one time, after a particularly epic Full Moon Party, I spent the next day exploring the quieter side of the island, and it was pure bliss. It’s a great place to find balance – a little bit of wild, a little bit of zen.

If you’re a fan of what lies beneath the surface, then Koh Tao is your calling. Known as “Turtle Island,” this small islandis a global hotspot for scuba diving and snorkeling. The crystal clear waters are teeming with vibrant coral reefs and incredible marine life, from colorful fish to majestic sea turtles and even the occasional manta rays.
I’ve done some of my most memorable dives here, exploring underwater pinnacles and swimming through schools of barracuda. Even if you’re not a diver, the snorkeling is phenomenal, especially around the unique triple-island formation of Koh Nang Yuan, just a short day trip away. It’s truly one of the best places to experience Thailand’s underwater beauty.

Heading further east, close to the Cambodian border, you’ll find Koh Chang, Thailand’s second largest island. This one holds a special place in my heart because it still retains a wonderfully authentic, untamed feel. It’s less developed than Samui, with rugged jungle-clad mountains, dramatic waterfalls, and miles of relatively untouched white sandy beaches.

I’ve spent weeks on Koh Chang, hiking through dense mangrove forests, discovering hidden coves, and riding my scooter along winding coastal roads. The main beach of White Sand Beach offers plenty of amenities, but venture further south to places like Lonely Beach for a more laid-back, bohemian vibe. It’s a fantastic blend of adventure and relaxation, and the natural beauty here is simply captivating.
