Senator Entertainment has reached an agreement to sell television rights for a package of films to Germany’s public broadcaster ARD via its sales arm Degeto Film, for an undisclosed sum.

The transaction follows last week’s sale of DVD and video rights to Universal Pictures Germany, and further distribution deals are expected in the coming days.

Senator declined to name the specific titles included in the ARD deal.

Industry observers say the recent deals give Senator a welcome boost after a difficult period: the company recently warned it would cut its projected 2001 operating profit by more than 90%.

Senator attributed the dramatic downgrade to stiff box-office competition from tentpoles such as Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the postponement of Nicole Kidman’s The Others into 2002, and the weak performance of Tomcats, the first release under its output arrangement with Revolution Studios.

Among Senator’s upcoming slate are The Others, Enigma, Charlotte Gray and Black Hawk Down; Universal’s pickup of 29 titles reportedly included Black Hawk Down and America’s Sweethearts.

Separately, Senator has reorganized its film production and acquisition operations into a single corporate-level division led by Benjamin Herrmann, formerly head of Senator Film Produktion and distributor Senator Film Verleih.

Jurgen Fabritius, a former Kinowelt executive, has been appointed managing director of Senator Film Verleih and will oversee marketing and distribution for films released in German-language territories, joining co-managing director Bernd Tietze, who will remain responsible for business and legal affairs.

Fabritius previously ran Kinowelt’s Arthaus distribution unit for three years until that division was closed amid Kinowelt’s financial restructuring.

Ralf Zimmermann, formerly head of Munich-based Mr. Brown Entertainment, has been named head of production at Senator Film Produktion; Zimmermann produced last year’s comedy hit Now or Never while at Mr. Brown, a company co-owned by actor-director Til Schweiger and Senator.
