With research advancing in leaps and bounds in every vertical, plumbing solutions are not to be left behind. In this regard, CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) and UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) pipes are types of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) pipes which have distinct characteristics and are used in different applications.

There are key differences between CPVC and UPVC pipes which make them suitable for precise and distinct applications.

Composition: CPVC is PVC (polyvinylchloride) that has been chlorinated via a chlorination process. This process increases chlorine content, making CPVC more resistant to high temperatures and chemical degradation whereas UPVC does not contain any plasticizers (hence “unplasticized”). It is more rigid and less flexible than regular PVC.

Temperature ResistanceCPVC Pipes can withstand higher temperatures, typically up to 82°C for prolonged periods. This makes it suitable for both hot water and cold water applications. UPVC can withstand temperatures up to 60°C. It is generally used for cold water supply and drainage systems, however it can withstand temperatures up to the threshold mentioned.

Applications: CPVC is commonly used in residential and commercial hot and cold water distribution, as well as industrial liquid handling applications where higher temperatures are needed.

UPVC is typically used for cold water distribution, waste water and drainage systems and some industrial applications where lower temperatures are involved

Economy: CPVC is generally more expensive than UPVC due to its enhanced properties and ability to withstand higher temperatures whereas UPVC is less expensive and more widely used for basic plumbing needs where high temperature resistance is not required.

Flexibility and Durability: CPVC is more flexible than UPVC but still rigid. It is durable and has a long service life in suitable applications. UPVC is more rigid and less flexible.

In a nutshell CPVC is ideal for hot water applications and environments requiring high while UPVC is suitable for cold water applications and general drainage systems, both offering a cost-effective solution for many standard plumbing needs.
