The primary aim of this treatment is to achieve a youthful appearance with minimal downtime. Laser resurfacing therapy can be categorized into two types: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative treatments involve some disruption of the outer epidermis, creating a controlled wound. In contrast, non-ablative treatments achieve results without damaging the outer layer of skin, thereby avoiding injury.

Fractionated ablative therapy is commonly conducted using laser technology, particularly carbon dioxide and Erbium YAG lasers. These devices are engineered to deliver energy that creates small, fractionated perforations or channels within the skin, intentionally spaced apart. Many devices offer the flexibility to adjust the spacing, percentage of perforations, and depth of the channels produced. Due to the interruption of epidermal integrity during treatment, healing typically takes a few days, and the duration of healing correlates directly with the level of therapy administered.
