• Soweto Residents Retaliate Against Taxi Industry
According to reports, angry Soweto residents have united in protest following yesterday’s brutal attack on two e-hailing drivers.
The attack is widely believed to be orchestrated by some in the taxi industry as there have been on-going tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers as the two compete for commuters.
One person died and two others were injured after e-hailing vehicles were attacked at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Wednesday evening, police confirmed.
As reported, an e-hailing vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when about four men approached the driver, shot at him, and then set the vehicle on fire.
Another vehicle nearby was also shot at. The driver managed to flee, but his vehicle was torched as well. It was later discovered that the driver and a passerby had sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.
This morning, residents blocked the entrance to Maponya Mall, and a taxi was subsequently set on fire. The community has also shown overwhelming support for e-hailing drivers.
